Solar project
To address the lack of fresh water in Cape Verde, Peace Corps Volunteers along with students and faculty at the Technical School in Assomada are designing and constructing a solar still. The prototype model, built in the Fall of 2007, is a simple concrete and glass system that cost $213 and distilled 1.75 liters/day. The phase two model completed in June 2008 cost about the same and distilled 2.25 liters/day.
Phase III entails further design modifications - the same simple design concept, this time using corrugated roofing tiles. The phase III model is under contruction.

Programa de Incentivos para Boa Higiene Oral
The jardin in my area is great about having the kids brush their teeth after lunch but it seems those lessons aren't being consistently continued at home. Here's a simple project based on positive reinforcement to encourage thier parents to get involved. It can be done pretty cheaply by substituting popcorn for drops and/or by limiting the time frame (3 months, 6 months etc) instead of the whole school year.

ICT Survival Tools in Cape Verde
Volunteers face a lot of ICT-related challenges in Africa that don’t exist in the US. Computer equipment tends to fail more frequently here, due to environmental factors like humidity and salt residue, and especially because of unstable voltage. When computer parts do fail, replacements are far less readily available here than at home. But one obstacle to Volunteers’ productivity with modern information and communication tools stands out – the scarcity and relatively high expense of Internet access.
Wind Energy Project Parque Natural Monte Gordo
This is a summary of a study that we did for Wind energy here at the park.
It lists most of the steps involved in a project like this. My partner in this was great, props to Lavinia!
The project didnt go through for many reasons so maybe all the steps were not there!
Please read and ask me any questions at all.

Newsletter
We are now taking submissions for entries for the newsletter. We are
going to issue it around December, so we need all entries sent to me
by November 1st.
What sort of articles do we want? Anything! Some timely topics would
be spending the holidays away from home, HIV/AIDS in accordance with
World AIDS Day on December 1st, adjusting to the first couple of weeks
or months at site. I am also interested in anything discussing
forseeable or felt affects that Peace Corps budget cuts have on our
lives and work out in the field.

Organization listing
Here is a little document that is on the desktop of the computers at the Peace Corps career center near DC. I've found it to be pretty useful and I don't know why they don't make it easily available to RPCVs elsewhere. It's a database with a few hundred websites of NGOs, consulting companys, contractors, think tanks, etc. Enjoy.
Acampamento de Meninas (Girls' Camp)
Acampamento de Meninas was a 5 day girls' camp which took place in the Conselho of Sao Miguel on the island of Santiago. We had sessions on leadership, making decisions, gender roles, HIV/AIDS. Our logo was "Seu Mente...Sua Corpo...Seu Escolha" which means "your mind...your body...your choice". 15 girls attended and we had 4 youth leaders leading activities.
